Biodiesel Production from Castor Oil and Its Application
This paper presents the result of investigations carried out in studying the emission and performance of diesel engine using the castor biodiesel and its blend with diesel from 0% to 40% by volume.
Optimization of in-situ biodiesel production from raw castor oil-bean seed was carried out from raw castor bean oil seed (37.9% oil content) by alkaline catalyzed in-situ trans-esterification with

Castor oil biodiesel production and optimization, ScienceDirect
Castor oil contains 80–90% of hydroxyl fatty acid, ricinoleic acid (Scheme 1) and about10% non-hydroxylated fatty acids, mainly oleic and linoleic acids.Such especial composition causes a disadvantage for its use for biodiesel production, since its viscosity is about 7 times higher than the one of other vegetable oils [10].
The castor oil without cleaning or renement was obtained according to Ávila-Váquez et al. [10], this “raw” castor oil was used for the hydrolysis assays. The raw castor oil was degummed and neutralized to obtain a puried castor oil [30]. The extracted 10, and puried castor oil was used for enzymatic BD production.
- Can castor oil be used as a feedstock for biodiesel production?
- Though it has the nature of the food, castor oil can be used as a feedstock for biodiesel production. This review paper has presented a detailed overview of castor oil, the physicochemical properties of castor oil and its biodiesel, the performance, emission and combustion characteristics of the castor oil biodiesel used diesel engine.
- Why is castor oil used in biodiesel production?
- Castor oil has recently attracted attention for producing and optimizing biodiesel production due to its high content of ricinoleic fatty acid and the possibility to esterify with only methanol, which assures low production costs.
- Is castor seed oil a good biofuel for diesel engines?
- Hence, this outcome leads to the conclusion that the biodiesel derived from castor seed oil is a high-quality liquid biofuel well-suited for general diesel engines, and particularly suitable for single-cylinder diesel engines in agriculture, as it exhibits complete combustion within the engine. Fig. 7.
- Can castor seed oil be converted into biodiesel?
- Nonetheless, upon the conversion of castor seed oil into biodiesel, the kinematic viscosity decreased to 10.36?cSt, which remains twice as high as the standard for biodiesel oil. Additionally, the heating value of castor seed oil biodiesel (8929?kcal/kg) was roughly 17% lower than that of petroleum diesel oil (10,777?kcal/kg).
- Can castor beans be used to produce biodiesel?
- Ricinus communis (castor beans) are a high potential feedstock for biodiesel production, capable of supplying up to 60% of the non-edible oil required. Castor bean plants have strong adaptation to various weather conditions and can grow in marginal soils.
- How is biodiesel derived from castor seed oil tested?
- Ultimately, the assessment of biodiesel product quality, derived from castor seed oil, and the blending of castor seed oil biodiesel with petroleum diesel oil to achieve B30 and B40, followed the testing protocols outlined in the American Society for Testing and Materials methods (ASTM-D6751) and European Standard methods (EN-14214).
