Embracing the Golden Opportunity in Sunflower Oil Production
“Ghana exports fish flakes in sunflower oil to the tune of 147 million dollars annually, if the oil is produced in the country, there will be an increase in production of fish flakes which means more income generation,” he said. Mr. Sulemana called for the establishment of a sunflower processing plant to create jobs to resuscitate the economy.
Sunflower: Sunflower oil, or Helianthus annuus, is a popular vegetable oil. Refining crude sunflower oil reduces FFAs to 0.24% [19]. Sunflowers contain 35 to 45% oil, whereas sunflower seeds contain 50–60% triglyceride oil and 20–25% protein. Sunflower oil includes 69% linoleic acid (C18:2), 20% oleic acid (C18:1), and 11% saturated fatty

Comprehensive Review on Lipid-based Biomasses as Biodiesel
In Ghana, around 230 ha of sunflower farms . were recently constructed under a project sponsored . jointly by the United Nations Development Programme . oil to be used as a biodiesel feedstock
Abstract—The objective is to convert waste sunflower oil used for domestic purposes such as cooking oil into biodiesel using an alkali catalysed transesterification process. Sunflower is one of the leading oil seed crop, cultivated for the production of oil in the world. Biodiesel is gaining more and more importance as an

Ghana to start cultivating sunflower in large quantities in 2024
Presently, Ghana imports a minimum of USD 4 million worth of sunflower oil yearly for fish processing companies, which in turn exports fish flakes in sunflower oil to the tune of USD 147 million annually. This is because the fish processing companies are mandated by the US Food and drugs Authority to use sunflower oil to prepare fish flakes.
The used oil sample will be bought in big batches for easy convenience to transport. We took both used sunflower oil and coconut oil separately. The collected used oil then labelled for easy detection on Figure 1 (Used Cooking Oil (UCO)) Filtration Of UCO The collected used oil samples needed to be filtered as it

- Which energy crops can be used for biofuel production in Ghana?
- Energy crops (woody energy crops and perennial herbaceous crops) In Ghana, energy crops that have potential as feedstocks for biofuel production include sugarcane, sweet sorghum, maize and cassava for ethanol, and oil palm, coconut, sunflower, soy bean and jatropha for biodiesel .
- Can biofuels be used as alternative fuels in Ghana?
- The production and use of liquid biofuels as alternative fuels to fossil fuel is a recent phenomenon in Ghana. Generally, the main interest has been on biodiesel derived from jatropha, palm oil and soybean.
- Did UNDP support sunflower bio-diesel production in Ghana?
- UNDP supported Sunflower Bio-diesel production in Ghana to start in January 2009, United Nations Development Programme brief, Ghana; 2008. Scurlock JMO. Mischanthus: a review of European experience with a novel energy crop. ORNL/TM-13732; 1999. CSAE. Fertile ground: boosting cocoa production among smallholders. Briefing paper.
- How to make biodiesel from sunflower seeds?
- The oil extracted from seeds was applied for biodiesel production through transesterification using a 6:1 methanol to oil molar ratio with 0.7% catalyst at 50 °C for 65 min. The process resulted in a 96.2% biodiesel yield with a heating value of 41.6 MJ/kg, corresponding to 84 kg biodiesel per ton of sunflower crop and 108.8 L gasoline-equivalent.
- Can sunflower oil be used for biofuel production?
- The residues of the sunflower crop are inexpensive and widely available substrates. These waste streams are typically burned or even left unused, creating serious environmental issues. In the present study, sunflower oil and its residues are used for biofuel production in the biorefinery framework.
- Can sunflower produce biogas and biodiesel?
- The results showed the high potential of the sunflower crop for biogas and biodiesel production, even without pretreatment and acidic transesterification. The optimum biorefinery produced 11095.0 MJ bioenergy (210.9 m 3 methane and 0.084 t biodiesel) per ton of sunflower.
