2.2: The process of crude oil refining, Engineering LibreTexts
Midstream activites involve the distribution of crude oil to refiners; the refining of crude oil into saleable products; and the distribution of products to wholesalers and retailers. Examples of firms that would belong in the midstream segment of the industry include companies that transport oil by pipeline, truck or parge (e.g., Magellan
Petroleum refineries process crude oil into many different petroleum products. The physical characteristics of crude oil determine how the refineries turn it into the highest-value products. Not all crude oil is the same. The physical characteristics of crude oil determine how refineries process it.

List of crude oil products, Wikipedia
The three most quoted oil products are North America's West Texas Intermediate crude (WTI), North Sea Brent Crude, and the UAE Dubai Crude, and their pricing is used as a barometer for the entire petroleum industry, although, in total, there are 46 key oil exporting countries. Brent Crude is typically priced at about $2 over the WTI Spot price
This is a classification of refining processes and the types of refinery products, shown by a flow chart. The flow chart starts with crude oil. Above crude oil chemical constitution is written and below physical properties are written. Crude oil leads to the refining process including separation, conversion, finishing and support.

Oil and petroleum products explained Refining crude oil
What is a refinery? Petroleum refineries convert crude oil and other liquids into many petroleum products that people use every day. Most refineries focus on producing transportation fuels. On average, U.S. refineries produce, from a 42-gallon barrel of crude oil: About 19 to 20 gallons of motor gasoline
The refineries studied in this paper processed ~74.4 Mbbl d −1 of crude oil, equivalent to 93% of the actual global crude oil-refining throughput in 2015 24.The ten countries with the highest

Economics of Oil Refining, SpringerLink
The refining (gross) margin is the difference between the value of products (excluding taxes and distribution costs) leaving the refinery and the cost of crude oil entering the refinery. The net margin is equal to the gross margin less variable costs. The refining margin depends on many parameters and in particular on the refining scheme.
Light crude oil has a higher API Gravity, indicating lower density and higher quality, while heavy crude oil has a lower API Gravity. Sulfur content: Crude oil is categorized as sweet or sour based on its sulfur content. Sweet crude oil has low sulfur content, making it less corrosive and more desirable.
- Does Venezuela have oil refining?
- A paid subscription is required for full access. Venezuela's oil refining capacity has remained stable in the past decade, at 1.3 million barrels per day. Since 1990, the country's capacity increased by approximately 10 percent. Presently Amuay, a part of the Paraguaná Refinery Complex, was the largest refining unit in Venezuela, based on capacity.
- Will PDVSA reanimate Venezuela's motor fuel production?
- (Reuters, 8.Jul.2021) ¡ª Venezuela¡¯s state-run oil company PDVSA has started producing two upgraded crude grades for domestic refining, aiming at reanimating the country¡¯s much-needed output of motor fuels, according to a company document and sources close the decision.
- Which refiners rely on Venezuela?
- Other refiners such as Chalmette, Saint Charles, and Texas City are highly dependent on Venezuela for more than 60% of their total imports. The average crude quality imported by the refiners running Venezuelan crudes involves a 21.8 degree API and 2.7% sulphur spec crude. Replacing such barrels will be a tall task.
- Why are Venezuela's oil exports so volatile?
- Under U.S. sanctions since 2019, Venezuela's exports of crude and refined products have been highly volatile. Lack of investment and frequent fires and outages at the South American country's aging oil infrastructure put a ceiling on production and sales.
- Will Chevron be able to produce crude oil in Venezuela?
- Much of Venezuela's crude oil production capacity and infrastructure have suffered from a decade-long lack of capital and regular maintenance. Chevron's earlier exemption increased its production to 135,000 barrels per day (b/d) in 2023, and we expect Chevron's output in Venezuela to reach 200,000 b/d by the end of 2024.
- Is Venezuela's crude oil production on a downtrend?
- Venezuelan crude oil production has been on a downtrend for years. This is true across all crude grades, but from a composition standpoint, the heavies and extra heavies now make up over 71% of total Venezuelan crudes compared to sub 60% in 2013. In other words, the type of barrel produced is heavier than in the past.
