Status of biodiesel research and development in Kenya
Research has established that biodiesel performs well in engine and is considered to be fuel with low carbon emission. This gives it a possibility of replacing it with fuel obtained from fossil

Characterization of Sunflower Oil Biodiesel as Alternative
The samples analyzed at rates of 5, 10, and 20 °C min −1 show a single well-defined step which describes the decomposition and volatilization processes (Fig. 3).The decomposition of sunflower oil occurs in the range of 320…485 °C and biodiesel in the range of 140…325 °C.
The acid values of biodiesel produced from non-treated and treated fractions were high (0.7–0.8 mg of KOH/g of oil), as compared to the biodiesel produced from non-treated and treated pure oil.

A Comprehensive Review on Rare Biodiesel Feedstock
The world is now experiencing the first real global energy crisis, the effects of which will be felt for many years to come. Fossil fuels have accounted for more than 80% of the world’s energy requirements for decades. The cost of coal has reached record highs, while the price of oil reached at it’s peak in the middle of 2022 at well over 100 US dollars per barrel before declining. Rising
The main feedstock currently used for biodiesel production includes palm oil, sunflower, rapeseed, soybean, and canola seed. A great challenge of using vegetable oils for biodiesel production is the availability of crop land for oil production to produce enough biodiesel that significantly replaces the current fossil fuel consumption [3].
- Is sunflower vegetable oil a good choice for biodiesel production?
- Therefore, the properties of biodiesel prepared from used vegetable oil were invariably close to those of commercial diesel. Thus, it can be concluded that sunflower vegetable oil is a good choice for large-scale production of biodiesel [ 20 ]. These catalysts are benign to the environment and are basically double-layered hydroxides.
- Can sunflower biodiesel replace fossil fuels?
- A comprehensive research has been done to study all technical aspects involved in the production of sunflower biodiesel, in order to aid in the possible supplantation of fossil fuels by sunflower biodiesel. The energy resources of a country dictate and determine its economic wealth and status.
- What is the water content of sunflower biodiesel?
- According to Table 6, the produced sunflower biodiesel had a water content of 0.03 wt% which was below the maximum limits allowed by international standards. This was lower than those found in literature for biodiesel produced from sunflower and waste cooking oils [ 36, 77 ].
- Can sunflower waste cooking oil be produced over enhanced bifunctional catalyst?
- In this study, the production of FAME from sunflower waste cooking oil over the enhanced bifunctional catalyst was studied, to investigate the relationships between selected conditions of time, temperature and catalyst loading in obtaining a maximum yield, and optimum reaction conditions for the transesterification.
- Can India produce large-scale sunflower biodiesel?
- With the data presented in Tables 1, 2 and 3, an attempt has been made to provide a glimpse into the existing overall picture of sunflower production in India. India ranks among the top 15 producers of sunflower, at the world level, and thus, would be able to provide raw material for possible large-scale sunflower biodiesel production.
- How is biodiesel produced from sunflower oil?
- In this present study biodiesel was produced from sunflower oil by base-catalyzed transesterification process. A 30 L per batch experimental installation was used to produce biodiesel using a molar ratio of alcohol to oil 6:1, a reaction temperature of 65 °C and a reaction time of 2 h.
